Long A Centre For Industrialism In England, Cardiff Is Rapidly Becoming A Tourism Hot Spot

On average every year more than 12 million people visit Cardiff, mostly from other parts of the United Kingdom. Stag and hen parties especially are drawn to the renovated centre of Cardiff which has some fabulous modern buildings and masses of good bars and pubs. There are also thousands of sports fans who come to Cardiff to watch matches at the Millennium stadium. Cardiff also hosts big cricket matches for the England team as well as rugby games, about which the Welsh are fanatical.

Cardiff has been a city since 1905 and 50 years later it was named the capital of Wales. Tiger Bay port in Cardiff was once the busiest port in the world and it fed a burgeoning worldwide demand for coal. Although Tiger Bay port is not a hub for the transport of coal anymore, the city still has a thriving economy. 40% of the people who work there actually commute into Cardiff from surrounding areas of southern Wales. Like London, business and financial services have become the life blood of the Cardiff economy. Companies such as HBOS and Legal and General are some of those multi nationals which have a base in Cardiff.

Yet there are also plenty of smaller businesses, many of whom rely on renting vans to carry out their work. With one in five residents of Cardiff working in the hotel and restaurant business, distribution or the retail sector, it is no wonder that van hire Cardiff is so popular. Large television companies such as BBC Wales and ITV Wales have bases there along with the Welsh media. This industry will only grow once large film studios are built to the north of Cardiff in Valleywood. Favourite television programmes such as Doctor Who are set to be filmed there.

Van hire Cardiff is also very popular among students at Cardiff University. Cardiff University is situated next to the Cathays railway station. This is the main university of Wales and it is also known as the University of Wales, Cardiff. Ranked in the top 140 universities in the world, Cardiff University is regularly rated as excellent for its research facilities. In fact it is part of the Russell Group of Research Universities. The university is located in Cathays Park, although when it was first formed as the University College of South Wales & Monmouthshire there was debate about whether to locate it in Cardiff or Swansea. To this day there is a strong rivalry between the two universities and every year a varsity match is played between Cardiff and Swansea.

When the University first opened in 1883 it offered studies in French, German, Biology, Chemistry, English, Greek, Mathematics & Astronomy, History, Latin, Logic & Philosophy, Music and Physics. The university also teaches the Welsh language to its students. A Life Long Learning course is held at Cardiff University in which members of the public can study a whole range of subjects. Although there were thoughts of merging Cardiff University with the University of Wales College of Medicine the university will now provide medical education as a four year degree programme as of 2009. Cardiff University has ranked highly in both the Guardian and Times University guide supplements.
